Innovate UK focuses on thematic areas which are most likely to generate UK economic growth and which address global challenges and opportunities – and on competencies and technologies which enable innovation in these areas.  In making investments they apply 4 key criteria:

  • is there a large (global) market opportunity
  • Does the UK have the capability to develop and exploit the technology?
  • Is the idea “ready” – is the timing right?
  • Can Innovate UK make a difference?

This year’s PERCAT Research Gala was held on Thursday 2 October 2014 in The Great Hall, Aston Webb Building. The event was a collaboration between the College of Medical and Dental Sciences, Life and Environmental Sciences and the University of Nottingham.
We received over 50 abstracts from which our team of Postdoc reps shortlisted 10 oral presentations over the three institutions. Dorothy Hodgkin Fellowship scheme

The Royal Society’s Dorothy Hodgkin Fellowship scheme is now open for applications (closing date 12 Jan 2015).

This scheme provides funding for outstanding, early-career scientists in the UK who require a flexible working pattern due to personal circumstances such as parenting or caring responsibilities or health issues. To find out more information including case studies about current holders, visit:

The new Research Funding Calendars are available on the Research and Knowledge Transfer page here. We have added International and Translational opportunities to the set of calendars.

The new calendars are in Microsoft Excel so that you can filter by funder or deadline, and each scheme has a comment box with more information, which is visible when you hover the mouse over the scheme name.

Technology inspired innovation – Innovate UK

Innovate UK (formerly the Technology Strategy Board) have launched a competition for investment of up to £2m in feasibility studies to stimulate innovation across four enabling technology areas.

These four technology areas are: advanced materials; biosciences; electronics, sensors and photonics; and information and communications. Continue reading
