So your research is novel, original and exciting? Publish and tell the world, but contact the Technology Transfer office first!
The University understands the importance of publishing but remains keen to protect the patentability of intellectual property (IP). Public disclosure of research via publications, conference presentations or discussions with external collaborators could compromise your protection and/or the prospects for funding downstream. And critically, funding bodies are increasingly demanding evidence of IP protection. Therefore to help us help you, next time you draft a conference abstract or paper and use the word “novel”, we ask you to send a copy to the technology transfer team before distributing externally.
Your notification will enable us to assess the IP and quickly decide whether protection should be sought prior to publication.
Remember: Proactive management of IP protects funding – enabling continued research – resulting in ongoing publications!
